New York has set a new monthly record for online sports betting gross gaming revenue (GGR), reporting $248.9 million in May 2025, according to the latest figures from the New York State Gaming Commission.

The total marks a 0.8 percent increase from the previous record of $247 million set in January 2025. Although total betting handle in May dropped to $2.21 billion—down 10.8 percent from January’s $2.48 billion—the revenue surge indicates a stronger win rate for operators.

Year-on-year growth

Compared to the same period last year, May 2025 saw a significant rise in both GGR and handle. The handle increased 12.1 percent from $1.97 billion in May 2024, while GGR climbed 22.4 percent from $203.3 million. This growth highlights continued consumer engagement and more effective operator margins.

Education fund sees boost

Of the total GGR in May, $126.9 million was directed to New York’s education fund. This is also a 22.4 percent rise compared to the same month last year, underlining the substantial contribution of online sports betting to public funding. Since mobile sports betting launched in January 2022, the state has collected over $6.5 billion in GGR, with more than $3.2 billion allocated to education.

Platform providers earn more

Platform providers earned $122 million from the May GGR, a significant jump from April’s $94.4 million. This $28 million increase reflects the higher operator revenues and sustained platform activity.

April 2025 had previously posted a strong performance, with a GGR of $192.7 million on a 9.6 percent year-on-year increase in handle. At that time, FanDuel and DraftKings continued to dominate the market, leading in both GGR and betting volume.

Regulatory developments under review

The new revenue figures come as lawmakers in New York continue to discuss proposed changes to online betting regulations. A bill introduced in April 2025 seeks to implement limits on deposit amounts and restrict the use of credit cards for mobile sports betting. The legislation is still under review and has not yet been passed.

Continued market expansion

New York remains the largest mobile sports betting market in the United States. The sustained growth in GGR and handle, despite occasional month-on-month declines, reflects strong consumer interest and effective taxation policies.

With mobile betting now in its third year, the state continues to lead in terms of revenue generation and public funding contributions. As legislative discussions continue, market stakeholders and policymakers will be watching closely for any updates that could impact future operations.
