Ohio Senate green lights sports betting bill

This bill will see sports betting and charitable ebingo legalised through a free-market approach

The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 176 which would see sports betting and charitable ebingo get legalised through a free-market approach. The bill saw the approval of the committee in a 30-2 vote and if passed, will come into force on October 1st.

The application window for a sports betting licence will open on  January 1st 2022, with the licenses being awarded no later than April 1st 2022.

The delay between when the bill comes to force and the period when applicants can start the process for their licence gives time for all operators to begin in equal footing when the market opens.

“Everybody we’ve talked to says they want an equal start time, so applications for these licences will open up on January 1, 2022, licences will then be approved from April 1, 2022.’

The bill outlines three types of gaming licenses: mobile, brick and mortar, and kiosk and is sponsored by Senators Niraj Antani, R-Miamisburg, and Nathan Manning, R-North Ridgeville.

Antani said ‘This bill will spur economic opportunities for businesses in Ohio. Ohioans want legalised sports betting, and this bill will provide that with a safe expansion of gaming in our state.’

The Ohio Senate said that the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) will be regulating the market to ensure the safety and protection of the players and uphold regulations of licence holders to avoid illegal gambling.
