PAGCOR orders licensee to withdraw sponsorship from controversial online show

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has ordered one of its licensees to withdraw its advertising sponsorship from an online TV programme featuring “nearly naked” women.

PAGCOR Assistant Vice President for the Electronic Gaming and Licensing Department, Atty. Jeremy Luglug confirmed that he contacted the licensee after an online podcast alerted the agency about the sponsorship deal linked to the controversial programme, which a well-known actor hosts.

“We will not tolerate such advertising support by any of our licensees for such a very demeaning and sex-oriented show,” Luglug stated. He also clarified that the licensee does not own the programme, refuting claims made in the podcast. He further corrected the assertion that the licensee was a foreigner, stating that the individual is Filipino.

Addressing concerns about gambling addiction

Luglug also dismissed allegations that young people are becoming addicted to gambling, stressing that strict measures are in place to prevent underage access to gaming platforms.

“Our licensees have very strict Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols to ensure that only those who are 21 years old and above can play,” he explained. “And the same is true with our e-wallet providers.” He acknowledged, however, that minors may still be able to access gambling sites, but only through unlicensed and illegal online gaming platforms that PAGCOR does not regulate.

Appeal to parents and players

PAGCOR called on the public, particularly parents, to be vigilant in preventing minors from accessing gambling sites.

“We urge the public, especially our parents, to ensure that young people are not able to access sites that are intended only for adults,” Luglug said. He also advised players to engage only with PAGCOR-licensed gaming operators to uphold the credibility of the industry.

“We also urge gamers and players to patronise only PAGCOR-licensed gaming operators to preserve the integrity of the gaming industry,” he added.

Commitment to responsible gaming

In a recent speech, PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco reaffirmed the agency’s focus on promoting responsible gaming. Tengco said the agency is strengthening its initiatives and will require licensees to allocate a portion of their gross gaming revenue (GGR) to support nation-building projects. Tengco emphasised that ensuring market integrity and responsible gaming remains a key priority for PAGCOR, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable and ethical industry. Looking ahead, the agency remains optimistic about the future of Philippine gaming, believing that further progress and development lie ahead.
