Penn National Gaming announces Barstool branded sportsbook

Penn National Gaming are looking to launch sports betting across 20 states, including Maryland and Colorado

Penn National Gaming announced the opening of its first Barstool-branded sportsbook nation wide at the Ameristar Black Hawk casino in Colorado.

This sportsbook will be the first in Denver’s market that serves the gaming community in a retail location. Additionally, the company has expressed its desire to bring their sports betting app to Colorado sometime next year.

CEO of Penn National Jay Snowden (pictured right) outlined that the company currently operates 41 gaming locations in 19 states throughout the U.S. He stated that “this will be the first of many new retail locations for Barstool download (1)Sportsbooks at our casinos nationwide.”

“Each will incorporate several features that reflect the spirit of the Barstool Sports brand, resulting in unique sports betting experiences that we expect our customers will thoroughly enjoy,” Snowden reiterated that Penn National spent $163 million in January to acquire 36% of the sports media platform, Barstool, which boosted views of its media and social content by an estimated 66 million.

Penn is also planning to launch the Barstool app before the end of the year in Michigan which will lead to the targeting of additional states throughout 2021. The app is currently only available in Pennsylvania.
Snowden expressed that the goal is to successfully launch sports betting in every state where Penn National has gaming property which is actively legalised. It is estimated that the number could be as high as 20 states.

As Maryland has seen sports betting legalised this week, Penn is expected to pursue the option to acquire Hollywood Casino Perryville’s operations from real estate investment trust Gaming and Leisure Properties later this year.

In addition to Black Hawk, Penn is planning to present Barstool-branded retail sportsbooks between November and January at Greektown in Detroit and two casinos in Indiana, Ameristar East Chicago and Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg.

Penn hopes that by launching the Barstool branded sportsbooks, the demographic of its customer base 0-1will increase and become more varied. Currently it is made up of an average client age of 45 and older.

Penn also stated that the sportsbook at Ameristar Black Hawk will consist of sports betting kiosks and ticket writing stations that will accommodate thousands of sports betting options which includes a massive 24-foot-by-12 video wall with several large odds boards.

“Our customers are very excited to start wagering on sports,” said Ameristar Black Hawk General Manager Sean Demeule (pictured above). “The passion for professional and college sports runs deep in this region, and we look forward to becoming a destination for fans all year-round.”
Penn is also developing standalone Barstool-branded entertainment destinations in various markets.

“These locations will serve as virtual sportsbooks in large metropolitan areas in states with approved online sports betting, which we believe will further expand the reach of the Barstool brand and help us acquire new customers at attractive economics,” Snowden said.
