Punts, prizes and sports betting surprises

As the curtain rises on 2025’s bumper sports treasure trove, the question on every punter’s mind isn’t who will win, but how much will I win? Will the year roar into life, purring like Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari engine as bettors cash in on clever punts, or will it splutter and spurt, leaving gamblers as red-faced as Hamilton’s shiny new Ferrari suit? Will bookmakers end 2025 grinning from ear to ear, or is this the year of the underdog? 2025 could be the year of prizes and sports betting surprises!

With a mix of old favourites and new formats, 2025 promises to serve up a betting bonanza. The year starts and ends with a Luke Littler wonderland. Yes, the PDC World Darts Championship is the new Christmas tradition and the only place to see a giant hotdog, Darth Vader, three human traffic cones, and a six-foot bottle of tomato ketchup all at the same table.

The Six Nations, the UEFA Champions League Final, and the Ashes series offer plenty of betting opportunities. And, if traditional markets aren’t your style, fear not. With odds on an alien invasion or Manchester United taking a tumble into the Championship, there’s plenty to keep things entertaining.

Buckle up, tighten your seatbelt, and let’s dive into the top sporting events in 2025, along with a few wild wagers that might just defy the odds. Are you in it for the thrill or the pure spectacle? Are you the prophet of profit? Read on for an entertaining take on the top 2025 flutters. Of course, gamble responsibly and enjoy the stunning sporting spectacles on the horizon.

From rucks to gridiron glory

The ball is the same shape, but the games are different. From the raw skill and intensity of the Six Nations to the razzamatazz of the NFL, early 2025 offers us Six Nations and Super Bowl showdowns. As the 2025 Six Nations Championship looms, rugby enthusiasts are abuzz with predictions. Ireland, with back-to-back titles, are favourites to secure a third victory, mainly because of a favourable fixture list with England and the energetic and emerging French team to visit Dublin. The Autumn Series of games saw France close the gap in the betting markets with indications England could cause an upset. France dominated Japan, Argentina and New Zealand in the Autumn Series, whilst Ireland was impressive in wins against Argentina, Fiji and Australia. Outsiders Scotland ended their series with an impressive 27-13 win against Australia. Will Wales and Italy battle for the wooden spoon, or can they cause an upset?

Transitioning from the rugby pitch to the gridiron Super Bowl LIX will dazzle fans at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 9. The Kansas City Chiefs (15-2), led by the phenomenal Patrick Mahomes and his go-to target Travis Kelce, are favourites to achieve a historic third consecutive title. They are AFC’s number 1 seed and will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Detroit Lions (15-2) destroyed rivals Minnesota Vikings 31-9 last night to clinch the NFC’s number 1 seed and will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Both the Lions and Chiefs will also have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Buffalo Bills (13-4) will face Denver Broncos (10-7) in the Wild Card round. Philadelphia Eagles (14-3) face the Green Bay Packers (9-8) in the Wild Card round and the Minnesota Vikings (14-3) travel to the LA Rams (10-7) in the Wild Card round.

Although all cannot be written off as contenders for the crown, Jared Goff’s precision power passing fuels a Lions team that looks the most likely to mount a serious challenge to the Chiefs for Super Bowl LIX.

Elsewhere, Josh Allen’s cannon arm continues to elevate the Bills, although the Baltimore Ravens lurk in the background as a serious threat and host the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7). Lamar Jackson, a dual-threat quarterback with breakneck speed, leads a versatile Ravens offence supported by a solid defensive core. Meanwhile, the Eagles Jalen Hurts will look to navigate the playoffs as the No. 2 seed, with strong momentum after a dominant season. The LA Chargers (11-6) face a trip to the Houston Texans (10-7), and the Washington Commanders (12-5) travel to Raymond James Stadium in Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-7).

The road to victory may favour Mahomes and the Chiefs in the betting markets, but with so many talented squads in contention, there’s room for a surprise for punters.

Galloping towards glory

The Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National are crown jewels of the National Hunt racing calendar, drawing bettors and fans alike. Add the classics like the 1000 and 2000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket, The Oaks and The Derby at Epsom Downs, and the historic St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, the oldest British Classic, and 2025 promises a bumper betting bonanza for horseracing fans.

If these don’t get your pulse galloping, how about the spectacle of Royal Ascot, the glamour of glorious Goodwood, or the sheer excitement of the York Ebor Festival? Globally, the horseracing calendar is equally rich. Mark your diaries for the Dubai World Cup in March, the Kentucky Derby in May, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October and the Melbourne Cup and Breeders Cup in November. All these offer thrilling opportunities for punters.

Whilst it’s early to pay serious attention to the odds for many of these races so early in the year, the festive period provided a tantalising glimpse of what’s coming. Kempton Park witnessed the triumphant return of Constitution Hill. After a year beset by health challenges, including a missed Cheltenham Festival and a severe bout of colic, Constitution Hill made an amazing comeback by storming to victory in the Christmas Hurdle. Defeating Lossiemouth by two and a half lengths, he reaffirmed his status as a top contender for the Champion Hurdle in March.

Looking ahead, the City of Troy, Ancient Wisdom and Los Angeles feature highly on current betting markets for many of the big races in 2025.

On cue for Crucible clashes

Think of the Crucible Theatre and immediately you’ll think of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. The ‘Steel City’ has a rich and prestigious history and drama over the years at the Crucible adds to the high stakes drama on offer at this year’s World Snooker Championship. Over the decades, the Crucible has witnessed snooker legends etching their name into history. Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins captivated audiences with his flamboyance, winning titles in 1972 and 1982. Jimmy ‘Whirlwind’ White, despite his six final heartbreaks, remains one of the sports’ most beloved figures and the bookies best friend! Who can forget Dennis Taylors’ 1985 black-ball victory against six-time champion Steve Davis? Yorkshire’s own Joe Johnson stunned the world with his underdog victory in 1986, proving that dreams can come true under the Crucible lights. Can ‘Rocket’ Ronnie O’Sullivan beat Stephen Hendry’s number of world titles as he is currently level on seven?

The 2025 World Snooker Championship promises excitement and surprises galore. Whilst Ronnie O’Sullivan remains favourite to lift the crown, defending champion Luca Brecel, priced at a long 16/1 to win again, continues to excite audiences with his fearless, free-flowing play and will be eager to defend his title. Mark Selby brings his trademark grit and resilience, while Judd Trump, with his flair and attacking brilliance, is always a contender.

Rising stars like Si Jiahui, who reached last year’s semi-finals, and Hossein Vafaei have the talent to challenge the sports elite. When you have a flutter, consider Ronnie’s experience, Brecel’s ability to handle high-pressure situations, and review the players who will be a good bet in the century markets, like Trump, Kyren Wilson and Mark Allen. Will ‘The Rocket’ make a 147 break, or will you rely on Neil Robertson for the century-break market? Here are the latest outright odds:

Football’s finest face the music

Football’s finest face the music in 2025, offering a fantastic feast for fans worldwide. The UEFA Champions League Final in Munich’s Allianz Arena promises to be a blockbuster event. In its first season of a new and exciting format, the UCL now features a single league phase with 36 teams playing eight games against different opponents. The top eight teams automatically progress to the round of 16, with the teams finishing between the ninth and 24th battling it out in a two-legged play-off to secure their spot in the knockout stages.

Six-time winners Liverpool top the table with six wins from six, while five-time winners Barcelona are in hot pursuit in second place with 5 wins and a loss. Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa and Inter Milan make up the top six teams. Fifteen-time winners Real Madrid have had a strange start and sit mid-table just above Celtic, the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967. Manchester City can’t buy a win at the moment and languishes below Celtic in 22nd place with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. Whilst it’s impossible to write off Real Madrid, it is worth keeping an eye on the German teams Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, featuring record-breaking striker Harry Kane and the talented Jamal Musiala.

The FIFA Club World Cup in the USA introduces a new format, bringing together champions from various continents. The tournament will take place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July 2025. Twelve venues will host 32 teams playing 63 matches across the United States in what is a precursor to the FIFA 2026 World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the U.S.

European giants Real Madrid and two-time winners Chelsea will feature prominently alongside South American powerhouses such as Brazil’s Flamengo or Argentina’s River Plate. Teams from Asia, Africa and North America, including clubs like Al Ahly (Egypt), Tigres (Mexico) and South Africa champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC, promise diverse styles of play and potentially diverse betting markets.

For punters, this tournament offers an array of betting markets to explore. From outright winners to individual match outcomes, goal scorers, number of corners and yellow cards, this expanded format ensures opportunities for both calculated wagers and bold punts! Manchester City leads the betting market currently.

Roars and rumbles down under

The British and Irish Lions are set to roar down under as they tour Australia and look to cause an upset and wallop the Wallabies. The Lions will play nine games, including three test matches. Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium hosts the first test on Saturday July 19, followed by the second test on Saturday July 26, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with an expected full capacity of 100,000 fans. Sydney hosts the third test on Saturday, August 2. Head coach Andy Farrell will expect nothing less than a series victory, but what do the bookies say? Bet 365 has the Lions at 9/4 to win all three games against the Wallabies.

With a strong squad including the talented Joseph Suaalii, ‘Tongan Thor’ Taniela Tupou and the towering lock Nick Frost, current head coach Joe Schmidt will end his contract after the Lions tour and will want to win on home soil. Australia then heads straight into the Rugby Championship in August against The Puma’s, Argentina, the All Blacks of New Zealand and the Springboks of South Africa before the Bledisloe Cup game on home soil in Perth on October 4 against the All Blacks.

Whether you wish to punt on individual games, the entire series, or player performances, the Lions tour of Australia is definitely not one to be missed. Bookmakers will offer the best odds once the full squad selections and player fitness are confirmed. Look out for the announcements following the Six Nations.

And then there’s the small matter of The Ashes Series in Australia from November to January 2026. One of the oldest and most celebrated rivalries in world sport, The Ashes, dates back to 1882. Cricket fans will never forget Headingley in 1981 and ‘Ian Botham’s Ashes’, then back at Headingley in 2019 when Ben Stokes led England to an unlikely victory with an unbeaten 135 not out. Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff in 2005? The Adelaide Oval in 2006 when the legendary Shane Warne helped Australia stage a remarkable comeback to win by six wickets when England declared at 551/6?

Yorkshire’s Joe Root will hope to build upon his legacy by leading England to victory, but it will be a tough call against an outstanding Australian team. The bookmakers offer a whole range of bets, including series score, top wicket takers, most runs and most catches. Australia is the 8/13 favourite to retain The Ashes, with England priced at 13/5 and a draw at 9/2.

Women’s sporting triumphs

The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland showcases Europe’s top footballing nations. Reigning champions, the ‘lionesses’ of England will hope to keep their title, but a tough test awaits. Held from July 2 to July 27, the tournament features 16 teams competing across eight venues. Bettors can engage with markets on tournament winners, top scorers and match outcomes. Spain, England, Germany, Netherlands, France and Sweden will be among the top bet builders and accumulator bets.

An exciting year of women’s sports continues with the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, held in England from August 22 to September 27. This looks set to be a battle between England’s ‘Red Roses’ and the ‘Black Ferns’ of New Zealand.

In cricket, the Women’s World Cup in India offers a subcontinental spectacle. Teams will navigate diverse pitch conditions, with spin likely playing a pivotal role. Punters can delve into various markets, including top run scorers, leading wicket takers and match results. Australia, England and India lead the betting currently. But to date, these are the only teams to have qualified. South Africa appears to have secured a spot, while Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Bangladesh and the West Indies are vying for the remaining two automatic qualifying positions.

If these sports don’t float your boat, then there’s a host of major tennis tournaments, beginning with the Australian Open in January. The Netball World Cup takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, in July 2025 and Tokyo hosts the World Athletics Championships in August. Look out nearer to the time for the betting markets, but golf’s Ryder Cup always offers intensity and drama for punters on both sides of the pond. Scheduled from September 23 to 28, the 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

Weird bets in 2025

The world of gambling is a wonderfully weird place, and what better way to end this article than to dive into the stranger wagers that have captured punters’ imaginations. Bookmakers thrive on novelty bets and 2025 is no exception.

Ladbrokes have set the odds at 3/1 for Donald Trump’s first major post-office interview to be with Piers Morgan or Nigel Farage. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s antics keep the bookies busy, with 10/1 odds on him selling X (formerly Twitter) before the year is out. On a romantic front, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce is a short 2/1 to propose to Taylor Swift, adding a touch of pop-culture flair to the betting landscape. And if you are looking into space, bets beyond earth offer fun odds. BoyleSports reports that bets on the discovery of alien life are some of their most popular for 2025 and offer a mere 20/1 for ET to phone home (again).

Turning to football, Manchester United started their Premier League season at 250/1 for relegation under Erik ten Hag. However, after a disastrous start, Ruben Amorim replaced Ten Hag but has struggled to unite a mediocre squad. An honourable 2-2 draw at Anfield might just have sparked new life into their season. Currently, Bet365 and Paddy Power have United at 33/1 for relegation with Southampton virtual certainties for the drop at 1/500 following a sombre 5-0 hammering at home to Brentford this weekend.

Just down the road in Merseyside, Everton is bracing for another tumultuous season, their last at Goodison Park. With a sleek new stadium to debut in the 2025-26 campaign, there’s a sombre cloud hanging over the ‘Toffees.’ At 9/4, the odds of Everton beginning their new era in the Championship are not far-fetched.

From potential alien discoveries to footballing woes and celebrity proposals, 2025 looks to be a year of wild bets and sporting spectacles. From touchdowns to teardowns and the occasional extraterrestrial punt, 2025 promises a betting journey like no other. Will you bet on the stars or aim for the moon?
