South Africa: Carousel casino relinquishes licence

One of South Africa’s oldest casinos has decided to sell their casino licence to an unnamed buyer

The South African based casino announced last week that it was in its final stages of selling its Carousel casino licence, subject to approval, after submitting a notification to the North West Gambling Board.

However, it is not known how much and to whom it is being sold to. Enid Vickers, who released a statement on behalf of Sun International, told Pretoria News that the new owners do not want to reveal their identity until the licence has been approved.

Until an outcome is decided, Sun International has decided to appoint a management company to run the casino, which reopened on the 15th of December.

The CEO of the Sun International, Anthony Leeming (pictured), stated:Anthony Leeming

Earlier this year we said we would not reopen the Carousel Casino after lockdown restrictions were lifted. This remains the case. By having the management company run the casino, we will be protecting the livelihoods of many previous staff who can now be re-employed. But the casino will no longer form part of the Sun International Group, and it will not receive benefits from our Most Valued Guest loyalty programme.

Carousel Casino is one of the oldest casinos in South Africa, opening in the north of Pretoria in 1991. The entertainment center consists of a hotel of 57 rooms, 369 apartments and 582 hectares of undeveloped land,  worth an estimated R500 million. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Carousel Casino was forced to close in April this year.
