South African lottery registers second biggest win in history

A South African resident won R38million, the second largest win in Ithuba’s National Lottery history

An office worker in the North West area of South Africa has won R38 million after placing a R20 wager on the FNB banking app. The woman who has been a weekly punter, says her highest win never exceeded R400.

In an exclusive interview with News24 the lottery winner said:

“Most of the time I don’t check the numbers because your winnings are usually paid into your bank account. But this time, the following day, a man from FNB called me to tell me that I won. I initially thought I had won around R52 000, but the man said he could not tell me how much I had won – I needed to visit [lottery operator] Ithuba’s offices. But then I checked the numbers… I almost fell down! I couldn’t believe it” she said.

She also added that she had no plans to make any major modifications to her lifestyle as she has no intentions of resigning from her regular day job.

How will she spend the lottery winning?

Speaking of the possibility of exhausting her wins if she spends it buying luxury items and cars, she clearly stated that her plans are to channel her fortune into property investment, buy herself a simple Volkswagen TSI, renovate her aunt’s house where she lives as a tenant and build her mother a house and go on a vacation. She also has no intentions of telling family members of her fortune.

According to Ithuba’s Group CEO, Charmaine Mabuza (pictured), North West’s latest millionaire is the second largest winner recorded to date and the third in 2021.
