Striker Kane Hester charged with attempt to defraud bookies

Elgin City striker Kane Hester has been accused with attempting to defraud a betting company of £13,583 by deliberately getting booked during a match. The game against Hibernians took place on 26 July 2019 at the Betfred League Cup which took place at Borough Briggs Stadium in Elgin. The court also heard how the 27-year-old Scottish League footballer was found in possession of over £2,000 in cash found in his bedside drawer.

Hester is denying all charges.

Three other men, Findlay Soutar, Calvin Parrot and Brodie Myers, all of Montrose in Scotland are also accused with obtaining unlawful winnings of £13,583. They are charged with allegedly placing five individual bets with gaming operator Bet365 on Hester being booked during the game.

Myers had paid money into Soutar’s account and also into an account belonging to Parrott’. Stewart Duncan – Fiscal Deputy

Bet365, the bookmaker paid out winnings at odds of 5/1. It is difficult to predict what really happened as there are two versions of the course of events. The Court heard how it was allegedly agreed that combination bets were also placed and won. An alternate version alleges that the group cheated by placing five bets on Hester being booked and that he was shown a yellow card for a foul. This lead to them falsely obtain £13,583.32 in winnings.

They have all denied charges against them. The trial is being heard at Dundee Sheriff Court presided by Sheriff Paul Brown. The case is ongoing.

Integrity in the game of football has been under the spotlight recently. The initial accusations came at a crucial time when international sporting authorities are placing more scrutiny on preventing match fixing. According to the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), reports reveal that there has been a 25 percent increase recorded in suspicious betting activity between 2019 and 2020.
