Sweden’s ATG sets mandatory casino loss limits

The limit can be selected by the player himself and applies across all ATG casino products

ATG previously had a long legal monopoly for gambling on horse races in Sweden. Since Sweden’s introduction of the gambling act, it is free for others to challenge the monopoly position, but is also gave ATG the chance to offer casino games in addition to horse games.

Now ATG has introduced a mandatory weekly loss limit for their online casino games. This limit has to be selected by the players themselves and can be changed each week. The limit applies to net losses so higher winnings are increasing the amount a player can lose.

Maria Allmer, business project leader at ATG, said “Responsible gambling is ATG’s most important sustainability issue” and “We simply want to lead by example in the gaming industry.”

ATG further added that since it launched the casino vertical at the start of 2019 more than half of its customers have already set their own loss limits. ATG chief executive Hasse Lord Skarplöth explained that the company’s new policy goes beyond what is legally required and he also criticised and unfortunate gap in the law that allows customers to borrow money to gamble with little scrutiny.

ATG’s core product of horse racing in Sweden remains active while in the rest of the world most sport events and betting got cancelled.
