Swedish Gambling Authority tightens operator supervision

The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) has launched a fresh round of compliance checks on several licensed gambling operators. This move is part of a wider supervisory initiative to ensure that gambling companies operating in Sweden are following the rules on mandatory website disclosures. The aim is to verify whether essential information is being clearly displayed and made easily accessible to users, as required by Swedish gambling law.

Supervision triggered by audit findings

The decision follows a report released earlier in 2025 by the Swedish National Audit Office. The report highlighted serious shortcomings in the Gambling Authority’s supervision since the re-regulation of the gambling market in 2019. According to the report, regulatory oversight has not met the expectations set by the Swedish Government and the Riksdag.

In response, Spelinspektionen acknowledged the findings and admitted that it has struggled to apply effective control measures. The current review of licensees is intended to close some of the gaps identified by the Audit Office.

Focus on website transparency

The supervisory process focuses on how licensed companies present legally required information on their websites. This includes terms and conditions, responsible gambling tools, contact details, and licence information. The Gambling Authority is examining both the type of information provided and how clearly it is presented to Swedish consumers.

The aim is to ensure that all users, regardless of their technical skills or language proficiency, can easily access critical information before engaging in gambling activities.

Operators under review

The license holders asked to comply with the latest request include several well-known brands such as Lotto, Polar, 888 Sweden, Mr Green, and PinBet, among others. These companies are required to provide specific information to the regulator during the spring of 2025. Depending on the results of the review, the Gambling Authority may take further regulatory action.

Ongoing action against unlicensed operators

In parallel with the new supervision round, Spelinspektionen has also intensified its enforcement actions against unlicensed operators. Just days ago, it issued bans against three companies—EOD Code SRL, Igloo Ventures SRL, and MIBS NV—for illegally targeting Swedish consumers without proper licences.

These operators used various tactics to market their services in Sweden without holding the required national licence. These included affiliate marketing, placing advertising banners on Swedish websites.

Spelinspektionen made it clear that these companies violated Swedish laws by not being licensed to operate in the country. As part of its strategy, the regulator is prioritising actions to ensure that gambling takes place only with licensed operators in Sweden. All decisions to ban illegal gambling companies are published on Spelinspektionen’s website to maintain transparency.
