Sydney’s The Star re-opens: 1,000 employees recalled

Star Entertainment Group discloses that it will increase capacity and reopen its casino and select food and beverage outlets at The Star Sydney

The Star Sydney, which was shut down on March 23, reopens its facilities on Monday (June 1, 2020), with its private gaming rooms limited only to 500 loyalty club members and can be accessed through an invitation-only basis, while the main gaming floor will remain closed to the public. Twelve food and beverage venues subsequently reopened with only 50 seated customers allowed as part of eased restrictions in the Australian state of New South Wales.

The Star Entertainment Group reinforced COVID-19 safetys protocols as part of its thorough work health and safety procedures that had been developed and endorsed by Australia’s two leading public health and infectious disease experts.

“The health and well-being of our customers and staff is paramount. This first step in the re-opening enables us to welcome back a material number of employees and to re-engage with our guests in a safe environment,” Star Entertainment Group CEO, Matt Bekier said.

The Star Group had previously laid aside 95% of its 9,000-strong workforce across NSW and Queensland, and the reopening of operations will have around 1,000 staff back to work on Monday, but restrictions mean that business volumes will be significantly below normal levels.

Bekier expressed the group’s sympathy for their staff saying, “We have attempted to ease financial stress for our people through paid pandemic leave, a targeted hardship program for the most seriously affected, early access to annual leave and long service leave, plus JobKeeper payments.

“However, having people back to work is the biggest step we can take. It will be a gradual process. From Monday we will have the opportunity to return more team members to their jobs.

“It will still leave us operating at significantly lower than usual levels and operations will not be materially profitable at this stage. However, the primary objective is returning our team members to work and re-engaging with guests.”

The Star group expects $20 million on operating expenses for the month of June with the limited opening of the casino, increased from $10 million due to its temporary closure.

Star disclosed that they accommodated 30,000 visitors on the average daily and around 11 million people per year in recent years.
