Synergy between land-based, iGaming is the future, Kasra Ghaharian says

Dr. Kasra Ghaharian, Director of Research at UNLV International Gaming Institute, highlighted the evolving relationship between land-based casino operators and iGaming providers. Speaking to SiGMA World, Ghaharian underscored the growing importance of bridging the gap between land-based casinos and online gaming to meet industry demands.

“Mohegan has a very large land-based presence on the East Coast of the US, and they leverage their technology by Flutter using the expertise of the iGaming sector. We will see more partnerships like this,” Ghaharian said.

Ghaharian is a global expert in gaming, specialising in machine learning, consumer protection, and payment modernisation. Among his research studies are digital payments in gambling, applying machine learning to transaction data to identify behavioural patterns and markers of problem gambling, and optimised casino floor layouts using mathematical methods.

Mohegan’s financial performance

In its Q4 and FY2024 financial results, Mohegan reported growth in several areas despite challenges. For the fiscal year ending 30 September 2024, Mohegan achieved a net revenue of $1.9 billion, marking a 13 percent increase year-over-year. Domestic operations were a key driver, with net revenue rising by 3 percent to $1.2 billion and adjusted EBITDA increasing by 3 percent to $318.8 million. However, the company faced setbacks internationally.

Digital expansion fuels growth

One of Mohegan’s standout performers was its digital segment. Mohegan Digital posted strong annual growth, with net revenue rising 60 percent to $160.7 million. Net income and adjusted EBITDA also increased by 61 percent to $79.2 million, reflecting the effectiveness of the company’s digital strategy.

This success aligns with Ghaharian’s remarks on the importance of leveraging digital expertise. Partnerships like Mohegan and Flutter Entertainment demonstrate how traditional gaming operators use online platforms to diversify revenue streams and enhance customer engagement.

Outlook for the gaming industry

Another example of land-based and online integration is the Philippines’ Casino Plus. Evan Spytma, CEO of Casino Plus and Hotel Stotsenberg, told SiGMA News earlier that the company has redefined its strategy by integrating online gaming with its land-based operations to reach new player segments. Traditionally focused on creating attractive physical spaces, land-based casinos are now positioned as a foundation for broader online platforms. This approach allows Casino Plus to connect with a growing audience of 12 to 13 million users, offering its partners comprehensive technology and management support without additional costs.

As Ghaharian noted, collaborations between land-based and iGaming operators will be crucial in shaping the industry’s future. As an example, Mohegan’s dual focus on domestic stability and international expansion provides valuable insights into the shifting dynamics of global gaming. Its ability to leverage synergies, such as its collaboration with Flutter Entertainment, will determine how it navigates the competitive landscape moving forward.
