The BGC calls for an established Gambling Ombudsman

The Betting and Gaming Council is determined to drive up standards in the regulated betting industry when it comes to customer concerns with a chartered Gambling Ombudsman

The Betting and Gaming Council is calling for the UK Government to establish a Gambling Ombudsman. This body will be dealing with customer concerns, improving the system that’s already in place.

The BGC represents betting shops, casinos, and online operators. This call, if applied forward, will see all licensed betting and gaming operators sign up to the new body as a legal requirement.

Chief Executive, Michael DugherChief Executive, Michael Dugher believes that the BGC’s support for a gambling ombudsman will prove the industry’s determination to drive up standards in customer success.

He goes on to say “This is further evidence of the BGC’s determination to drive up standards in the regulated betting and gaming industry.”

“We hope that the government will look favorably on our calls for a gambling ombudsman to be established as soon as possible following the conclusion of the gambling review, which we strongly support.

“The BGC and its members recognise the need for further change in our industry and a new gambling ombudsman would be a step forward in customer redress – I’m proud to be giving it our backing.”

This same idea of an ombudsman was raised two years ago by the previous Labour deputy leader Tom Watson.

The main aim for this body will be equal to the Gambling Commission with a specific dedication to consumer protection and data transparency, providing players with legal safeguards and ensuring financial compensation when appropriate.

This move comes with the UK government opening a new review into the 2005 Gambling Act. The new oversight ensures that the legislation is ‘fit for the digital age’. This process has seen dialogue focused on consumer protection take a key role in the review.
