Thousands of jobs recovered after casinos in Medellin reopened

Casinos in Medellin started reopening with strict protocols and so far, approximately 2,700 jobs from the gambling sector have been recovered

After six months of closure form the pandemic, and almost one billion pesos accumulated in losses for the gambling sector, added to the $120 billion that was destined to the health sector, the casinos in Medellin have started reopening with sanitary measures in place.

Elizabeth Maya Cano CornazarThis is what David Escobar, the coordinator of the casino, had to say about the reopening “The truth is that the news is a great respite for all of us, we are very happy to continue with this activity, this brings many economic benefits to our families.’

The disinfection of machines, temperature checking and perspex used to separate clients are just a few of the measures that will be taking place. Most casinos in the LatAm regions have already started experimenting with this.

Valentina Porras, manager of the VIP casino mentioned said ‘It is already a fact, we are open with all the biosecurity protocols, we have installed some perspex glasses in half of our machines (..) We are predicting that in about a year or two years, to be able to recover everything that was lost.’

Elizabeth Maya Cano, president of Cornazar, said that ‘For more than five months these establishments have been closed, without receiving any kind of income, and without contributing a great amount of money for health in Colombia.’

An expected $18 billion will be recovered from the losses after the 167 authorised casinos in Medellin will  restart their activity. With the openings of casinos, horse racing, and bingos in the LatAm Region, it seems like a slow improvement on the situation imposed by the pandemic taking place.
