Three casinos get preliminary approval for sports betting licences in Maryland

Later this year, the first in-person wagers might take place

According to the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency, casinos in Maryland produced a total of $165.4 million in gaming revenue in September.

While total sales were somewhat lower than in August ($165 million vs. $168 million), it was still a strong showing.

The numbers reflect a 15.1% rise over September 2020, when gaming establishments earned $143.7 in revenue.

It’s worth noting, too, that at the same time period last year, the state’s six casinos ran at a 50% capacity due to Covid-19 limits. To date, revenue for the fiscal year 2022 totals $514 million, up 18.7% from $433.2 million in the fiscal year 2021.

Maryland’s casinos provided $69 million to the state in September, up from $59.7 million in September last year by $9.3 million (15.6 percent). In September 2021, contributions to the Education Trust Fund (ETF) were $50.1 million, up 15.6 percent.

Although the state has been moving slower than others with sports betting legalisation, things are finally appearing to be coming together.

After announcing last month that the first sportsbooks might open by the end of the year, three casinos have gained preliminary permission from a parliamentary committee, allowing them to begin sports betting operations once one more signoff is secured.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission approved applications for Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino, Hanover’s Live! Casino & Hotel, and MGM National Harbor yesterday.

According to CBS Baltimore, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said, “We’re pleased to have these three applicants approved and move them along to the SWARC. Our team is diligently implementing the sports wagering law, and we’re one step closer to the first in-person wagers, which we hope will take place by late fall.”

The three gaming giants will now seek formal permission from the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC), which is scheduled to convene on October 14. The three casinos are among the 17 firms identified as possible sportsbook venues in the bill to allow sports betting.
