UK, Malta, have best regulated markets, new study shows

This study addressed the strengths and weaknesses of licensing regimes across five different areas: regulation, tax, product, integrity and advertising

The UK, closely followed by Malta, have been given the best overall marks in a new international study assessing the best regulated gambling markets in the world.

Dubbed as a “first-of-its-kind study” and conducted by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and data business H2 Gambling capital, the study shows that the UK has the most robust regulated sector, scoring 91 points out of 100 in an ‘optimum market assessment’ table.

According to the study, Great Britain has a robust regulation and moderate operator costs and taxation.

Malta and the UK 1“It represents one of the earliest pieces of online gambling legislation and remains one of the best examples of regulation globally. Forecast to retain high operator numbers and channeling rate,” the report concludes.

Malta is classified as the second-best jurisdiction worldwide.

Described in the report as “primarily an international operating hub”, the report states that Malta has “a jurisdiction permitting a wide betting product range while integrity measures were recently strengthened.”

With the second overall best overall assessment, the study says that Malta has an “attractive tax, including potential for significant reduction in corporation tax” and is expected to “continue to attract operators.”

The study assessed the strengths and weaknesses of licensing regimes across five different areas: regulation, tax, product, integrity and advertising.

It was conducted using data from a variety of major regulated betting operators, which represent almost 50 per cent of all commercial online betting globally.

The study predicts that the global betting turnover will reach $767 billion by 2025, with revenue of over $106 billion.

For the first time, online betting overtook land-based betting in 2020 and is now expected to hold that position.

Malta has long been classified as one of the best jurisdictions worldwide for online gaming.
