United vs Spurs – Can either side break the cycle of inconsistency?

Manchester United’s comeback to win 5-3 in 2001-02, Kane and Co.’s 6-1 demolition in 2020-21, Nani’s controversial goal against Gomes, and Pedro Mendes’ disallowed strike in 2005—Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur has produced iconic moments over the years, especially in the Premier League era.

This weekend, both teams face each other again, struggling for consistency. After five games, United and Spurs have identical records: two wins, two losses, and a draw each. They sit mid-table, in tenth and eleventh place, with only Spurs’ superior goal difference edging them ahead.

Ten Hag, even after three years in charge, is yet to find a defined identity for his side. There are constant stories of player bust-ups, which may explain their inconsistency. United can convincingly win 3-0 against newly promoted Southampton but then settle for a dull 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in their last Premier League outing.

The Red Devils may have hoped for some reprieve in their midweek Europa League match against FC Twente, but their forwards seemed to have disappeared. Despite creating numerous chances, only Christian Eriksen found the back of the net. With a strong Premier League-worthy line-up on the pitch, squad rotation was hardly an excuse for the lacklustre performance.

Inconsistency plagues season

Spurs, like United, have also struggled. After a disappointing loss to Newcastle and a narrow 1-0 defeat in the North London Derby, they now turn their attention to their Europa League opener against Qarabağ. Postecoglou will be keen to jumpstart Tottenham’s season and climb the table.

This is Tottenham’s second season without Harry Kane, who left for Bayern Munich. The responsibility for goals now lies with new club captain Heung-Min Son and Richarlison.

In the Premier League era, United have historically had the upper hand. Out of 64 league meetings, United have won 39, while Spurs have managed just 11 victories, with 14 draws. However, in the last three meetings, it’s been much closer—two 2-2 draws and a 2-0 win for Spurs, giving them the slight edge heading into this weekend’s clash.
