Uruguay’s announcement of new 5 star-casino-resort will be a first for Rocha

Uruguayan president expected to announce a new 5-star-hotel-casino in La Coronilla, Rocha in the coming days

News of plans to launch a new 5-star-casino-hotel in Rocha came in after Alejo Umpiérrez (seen below left), deputy of Rocha, the region in which the hotel will be built, provided the media outlet 970 Noticias information about the  hotel casino. The resort boasts 150 rooms and an additional convention centre, with an ambulance being provided for the area as an additional safety measure.

Umpiérrez stressed that his party is ‘the driving force behind the initiative: we have permanently pushed for this, we have tried to find suitable surfaces within the department. Rocha does not have any five-star hotel infrastructure.’ The initiative was then presented to President Luis Lacalle Pou and the Minister of Tourism, Germán Cardozo.

Umpiérrez continued ‘it will be a before and after in the history of tourism in La Rochelle (..) La Coronilla is a resort that has been depressed for decades by the action of the Andreoni channel. The government will begin work on the canal for more than 11 million dollars, to solve the pollution that reaches the sea through an artificial channel … that water will be diverted to the Laguna Merin, and that will allow the beaches to recover.’

This project is a part of the many aimed at reactivating the tourism sector in order to combat the heavy blow that has been dealt to the economy sector in Uruguay, a plan that will also include the construction of a hotel casino in Atlántida, and the re-launch of the hotel Casino de Carmelo.
