Veikkaus undergoes historical reform

The reform will require Veikkaus’ slot machines to implement compulsory authentication

According to the official site of Veikkaus, their slot machines will undergo a historical reform in a bid to fight against gambling addiction and underage gambling. The new reform will see their slot machines at non-casino venues all over Finland be subject to compulsory authentication. These places include kiosks, restaurants, stores and service stations.  Jari Heino | SiGMA News

The new measures are part of Veikkaus’ CSR programme which focuses on problem gambling and responsible gaming. The new procedure will allow gamblers to verify themselves on slot machines by using their unique “Veikkaus Card, by phone, or by using a payment card linked to their Loyal Customer status.”

Fortunately, there is not such a huge problem with gambling in Finland but Veikkaus’ aim is to prevent any problem from arising by implementing a number of preventive tools.

Jari Heino (pictured), SVP, Channels and Sales said:

We have actively brought forward the transition to authentication through our own actions and reduced the number of the slot machines. If a customer experiences gambling as a problem, this reform enables them to, for example, set a complete self-ban on their gambling. It will also be easier for the customers to follow their gambling activity

It is expected that player losses will decline by an estimated €300m. The new rules will allow players to self-exclude and therefore, they will not be allowed to play on slot machines. Furthermore, players will also be able to monitor their spending and the requirement to provide age verification will significantly decrease underage gambling.

Veikkaus currently has 10,000 slot machines all over the country via its partner network, with the number decreasing by more than 40% within the past year in their fight against problem gambling. Initially, Veikkaus were aiming to remove 8,000 slots from the line of service by the end of 2020.
