San Quentin 2: Death Row may not be so much of a shocker as we’re already familiar with the prison theme since the first installment was released in 2021, but it makes a fine sequel. We’re once again greeted by the five lovely inmates with cute nicknames—Crazy Joe, Biker Bill, Heinrich 3rd, Loco Luis, and Beefy Dick—who are all locked up for a reason. The prison may not look like a very bountiful place, but we’re here to make some wins. The inmates have amassed quite a fortune through their gruesome activities, and they challenge us to take it from them. But have a look at their nicknames once again. Extorting money from such characters is anything but easy. This is a high-risk game, after all.

It’s dusty and rusty here, and the color scheme encapsulates the environment quite well. San Quentin 2: Death Row is dominated by surprisingly pleasant, warm colors. Except for the inevitable greyness of prison walls, of course. The typically yellowish shades of dry Central California are paired with the rotten red tones of corroded prison bars and the well-known orange color of prison uniforms. The animated characters are presented in a GTA-like visual style, which is quite on-point. Animations aren’t too aggressive; in fact, they’re subtle and well-integrated. As the reels slide, we hear a rusty, metallic sound, precisely like the sliding of a cell door.

The game’s soundtrack is my personal favorite. We listen to a calm but still somehow tense melody during regular spins. It hints that things are okay for now, but something big is about to happen, like the build-up to a shootout scene in a crime movie. And then, when you enter the Green Mile spins, it switches to a heavy metal riff with an occasional Mariachi trumpet in the background. Brilliant! The culmination is here, and the big wins are about to happen.

Don’t get me started on the volatility here. It’s not just high, not even extreme—it’s insane! That’s how Nolimit City classified it. This game is played on a 5×4 grid with two additional rows at the top and bottom, which hold the locked Enhancer cells. There is a total of 1024 paylines. The Enhancer cells are unlocked when one or two Bonus symbols land in their reel, and they can reveal anything of the following—any of the five higher-paying symbols: a Wild, a Razor Split, or an xWays. If another one is on a row affected by an already split Jumping Wild, it will double its multiplier. Their multiplier is counted as the number of Wild symbols in the position where they land.
