2023 marks 60 successful years of Betsson

Recognised as a leader in the gaming sector, Betsson Group celebrates 60 years since it was established in 1963.  Headquartered in Malta, it operates in 14 countries over 22 territories.

Responsible gaming and customer protection

Betsson Group was one of the first operators to set limits for gamblers with self exclusion options. The educational support provided enabled players to manage their own gaming habits thereby experiencing more enjoyable entertainment.

Historical milestones

1963: Roulette tables were established in restaurants in Sweden by Bill Lindwall and Rolf Lundstrom. The company operated as AB Restaurang Rouletter.
1968: The partnership in Sweden expanded to become AB Roulett Konsult and Spelautomater.
1972: ‘Cherry’ was registered.
1973: New legislation in Sweden enabled the company to provide slot machines in restaurants that sold wine.
1978: Swedish parliament reformed gambling legislation.
1984: Cherry acquired a number of gaming companies and announced a newly created corporation.
1986: Cherry expanded to Eastern Europe.
1992: Eastern European operations announced major losses and Cherry streamlined operations. The company expanded operations to cruise liners.
1994: Cherry announced good profits and acquired Casino Invest.
1996: Company was listed on NGM Equity.
1998: Pontus Lindwall was appointed CEO.
1999: Cherry acquired First Casino.
2000: Company listed on Stockholm Stock Exchange.
2003: Cherry acquired a stake in UK sports betting company Betsson.
2004: Betsson acquired gaming licence in Malta.
2008: Betsson announced revenues in access of SEK 1 billion.
2009:  Betsson was named ‘most responsible gaming operator’ by EGR.
2010-2014:  Betsson made major acquisitions.
2015: Betsson upgraded to Nasdaq Stockholm.
2016-2021: Betsson announced major acquisitions.
2022: Betsson won 28 awards including “Sportsbook Operator of the Year” and “Casino Operator of the Year”.
2023:  Today Betsson operates in 14 countries covering 20 territories with plans for more strategic B2B and B2C  expansion.
