Bookies’ favourite wins Eurovision

Swedish singer Loreen was crowned winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 during the grand final in Liverpool last night. The 39-year-old star was the bookmakers’ favourite and was given odds of 10/11 by Betfair. She competed the contest with her new anthemic dance-pop track Tattoo, written by the same team behind Euphoria, after winning the Melodifestivalen competition – Sweden’s televised selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Finland was the runner up with odds of 11/5 for the act. Rapper and singer Kaarija, who perform his track Cha Cha Cha.

Millions of UK residents travelled to Liverpool during the past week hoping for their home country to be declared winner. The UK’s entry Mae Muller and her track I Wrote A Song had poor odds to win.  Muller was given 40/1 from bet365 and William Hill but Unibet put down the odds to 125/1. Fans were hoping that Mae Muller would follow Sam Ryder’s success last year with his success in achieving second place in the competition.

First woman to win twice

Loreen is only the second person to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice and she also becomes the first woman to win more than once. The only singer to win twice is Johnny Logan from Ireland who won the contest in 1980 and 1987.

“It feels crazy. This is so surreal, man, I’m happy and I’m thankful, I’m thankful to all you guys out there that voted for me. “The only thing I feel right now is so much love. Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to happen.” Loreen, winner of Eurovision 2023

Viewers were surprised earlier in the contest when The Princess of Wales made a surprise appearance playing the piano during the opening performance of Eurovision. She wore a blue Jenny Packham dress and earrings which belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II and played a pre-recorded instrumental piece, created by Joe Price and Kojo Samuel,
