Brazilian esports giant chooses Malta for its European strategic expansion

Brazil headquartered esports giant Furia, one of the largest esports and gaming organisations in the US, has selected Malta as its base for its European strategic expansion.

Speaking to SiGMA News, Silvio Schembri, Malta’s Minister for the Economy, EU Funds and Lands, said that Furia’s expansion to Malta is testament to the Government of Malta’s belief and ambitions to expand further into the international esports sector.

Headquarters located in Mellieha

Furia’s European offices are in Mellieha located in the north of Malta. They will be in full functional by the summer this year.

Furia teams participate frequently in tournaments in Europe and the company made the decision to establish its Malta-based headquarters as it would give more consistency and stability to racing rosters rather than using the temporary solutions that have been in place. The space will exceed more than 1000 square meters and will provide a location for Furia teams to compete in Europe.

ESL Pro League Season 17

Both Minister Schembri and Furia’s Co-Founder and CEO Jaime PĂĄdua expressed their delight about the collaboration to set up Furia’s headquarters in Malta during the ESL Pro League tournament this weekend which was also held in Malta.  PĂĄdua in a speech made by video said that the company’s substantial projected investment would contribute to Malta’s esports ecosystem.

He thanked the Minister for the government’s support in making it possible for the company to facilitate the company’s investment in Malta.

Malta has an agreement to host the largest CS:GO league in history in St Julians until the close of Season 20. There is a live audience during play offs. There are 24 world class teams competing for the price of US $850,000 and an invitation for the champions to attend the 2023 IEM Katovice.

Furia

Furia Esports is a Brazilian professional esports organization. It competes in a wide range of popular top titles that include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rocket League, League of Legends, Valorant and Rainbow Six: Siege. In 2022, Furia was named the fourth biggest esports organization in the world. The company’s new venture in Malta will facilitate spaces for Furia teams that compete in Europe.

SiGMA News was speaking with Minister Silvio Schembri. He is Minister for the Economy, EU Funds and Lands. Schembri started off his career in banking and then moved to the Central Bank of Malta where he worked as an economist. He was elected to parliament in 2013 and is chairperson of the Responsible Gaming Foundation, an independent institution set up to help, educate and prevent problems in gambling. Minister Schembri chairs the parliamentary committee for economic and financial affairs. He came up with the strategy to develop the esports and videogaming sectors on an international level in Malta.
