An Irish MP has introduced a bill to ban the use of credit cards for online and retail gambling in the country

The Gambling (No Credit Cards) Act of 2021 aims to amend the Gambling Act 1931 to promote responsible gambling by prohibiting the use of credit cards. Thomas Gould, Sinn Féin’s spokesman for addiction, rehabilitation, and health, introduced the case.

According to the original law, individuals seeking a license must agree not to participate in bets made using a credit card, and the new bill will make this requirement mandatory. The use of e-wallets will also be prohibited unless the payment provider can prove that safeguards are in place to prevent the use of credit cards.

After three months, those with existing permits will be subject to the new credit card regulations. Violations can result in fines of up to two years.

“I’m really proud to be able to introduce a bill that would ban credit cards for online and in-store betting,” Gould said.

While the government has not yet published a gambling regulation bill, Sinn Féin is committed to presenting credible safeguards that will help protect vulnerable populations.”

Ireland’s bookmakers announced in August that they would ban the use of credit cards in gambling and pre-watershed whistle advertising.

“We need to make sure that people who are struggling with addiction don’t gamble with money they don’t have or can’t afford,” Gould added.

“I call on all political parties and independents to support this law and ensure real protection for the most vulnerable in society.”
