China police arrest 93 people in a cross-border online gambling operation

93 people were arrested in China’s southwestern province after authorities conducted a major crackdown on cross-border online gambling operations.

According to a China Daily report, Sichuan police seized over 20 million yuan (€2.56 million) in illicit funds.

The report said the network had an operation from the Philippines and it is targeting Chinese gamblers.

The report added that the cross-border online gambling operation boasted nearly a million registered members in China, with illegal transactions exceeding 725.5 billion yuan (€93 billion).

Out of 93 people arrested, 50 suspects are already charged with running illegal casinos and facing trial.

The probe began after a Sichuan resident lost 100,000

The local media reported that a police probe began in May 2023 after a Sichuan resident lost over 100,000 yuan (€12,830) on a gambling website named “Kakawan.”

Sichuan police then established a task force and eventually uncovered a Philippine-based syndicate managing three online gambling platforms targeting Chinese citizens.

The report further said that many victims fell into debt due to gambling losses.
