High end gamblers support Macau’s gaming industry through COVID-19

60% of tourists visiting Macau during the outbreak were for gaming purposes

A new survey published by the Macau Research Center found that 60% of tourists visiting Macau during the outbreak were for gaming purposes, and the average person was willing to spend about MOP 87,000.

China Guangdong Province required mainland tourists who come from Macau to stay in for 14 days of compulsory quarantine, and the study broadly covers the time period since the implementation of this policy. Visitors to Macau fell to only 11,000 in April, a decrease of 3.4 million compared with the same period in 2019.

59% of visitors came to Macau for gambling and 87% had participated in gambling activities.

The research center visited 103 travelers from March to May, of which 93.2% came from the Mainland. Under the influence of isolation from Macau, these mainland tourists chose to stay longer in Macau, with an average stay of 6.7 days, and 59% chose to stay longer than 5 days.

The study also found that 59% of visitors came to Macau for gambling and 87% had participated in gambling activities. Their gambling budgets ranged from MOP 1,000 to MOP 500,000, with an average of MOP 87,000.

‘Compared with the mass market, the consumption decisions of this group of high-end gamblers may be less affected by the macroeconomic and social atmosphere.’

In addition to spending on gambling, tourists spend an average of MOP 45,549 during their visit to Macau, mainly in dining, shopping and accommodation.

The survey also found that this group of tourists visited Macau on average 5.8 times in the past 12 months, of which 83% had visited Macau three or more times in the past 12 months.

More than 70% of travelers are satisfied with the experience in Macau, and are happy with the epidemic prevention works in Macau.

The Macau Research Center believes that the results reflect the presence of a group of high-end gamblers who are loyal to Macau. It is recommended that gaming related industries identify this group of tourists and maintain a close relationship with them to provide a better buffer for companies to deal with possible future Business downturn.
