Report: Cambodia suspends issuance of gambling licence

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has taken decisive action to halt the expansion of gambling activities in the country citing their detrimental effects.

A local media reported that Hun Manet announced the suspension of new licence issuance and the possibility of revoking existing licences during a meeting with Cambodian communities in Australia and New Zealand.

The Prime Minister also urged investors to understand the move, emphasizing the government’s stance against promoting gambling, even if they operate within legal frameworks.

He stressed that any form of illegal gambling, whether small-scale or community-based, will face elimination as it is deemed counterproductive.

In addressing concerns about profitability, the Prime Minister underscored that gambling poses significant challenges and urged investors to recognize this reality.

He pointed out Cambodia’s remarkable progress over the past two decades, achieving lower-middle-income status without relying on revenue generated from illegal gambling activities.

Gambling law in the Southeast Asian country

In 2020, Cambodia passed the Law on Management of Commercial Gaming, the first comprehensive legal framework governing gambling activities in the country.

With this law, the Commercial Gambling Committee of Cambodia (CGCC) is primarily responsible for licencing major gambling activities within permitted zones in Cambodia.
