Malaysia blocks access to 2,195 online gambling websites and terminates 19,765 phone lines

The MCMC ups its efforts to crackdown on illegal gambling in the country by blocking access to websites found to be promoting online gaming

Malaysia-3As of March 31, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked access to 2,195 websites found to be promoting online gambling.

According to MCMC, during the same period, a total of 19,765 telephone lines were terminated as they were linked to spam text messages promoting online gambling, unlicensed moneylending services and so forth.

MCMC said in a statement, the action was taken based on an official application submitted by the police for offences under the Open Gambling House Act 1953 as well as information from the public.

“The MCMC had also worked in cooperation with foreign-based social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to remove such content in accordance with the terms of service and community standards set by them,” it said.

In terms of enforcement, The MCMC said that they are also conducting customer verification audit to ensure that active mobile prepaid subscriptions are not misused by irresponsible parties for criminal activities such as fraud and promotion of online casinos.

“The move is important to ensure that the numbers are not misused by irresponsible parties for criminal purposes, cyber fraud and promotion of online gambling,’ they added.

Internet users are also urged to report any content that promotes online gambling and not to share it on their social media platform. The MCMC stated any form of sharing would further promote the illegal online platform which is detrimental to Malaysian society.
