New Hengqin checkpoint opens integrating Macau to the island
Hengqin Port border-crossing facility is part of a collaborative effort combining the two region’s economies
The Hengqin Port border checkpoint across the Lotus Bridge from Macau’s Cotai is officially open for public use. Hengqin island can now accommodate up to 220,000 daily passenger trips.
The border-crossing facility, located in Hengqin Port, part of which comes under the Macau jurisdiction, is a collaborative effort between the two regions to integrate their economies. Hengqin has been touted as Macau’s partner for holiday packages since tourism infrastructures like themed attractions were already developed in the island in the last few years.
Before the opening of the border, only select number of people in their vehicles could enter Macau from Hengqin through the Lotus Bridge. Hengqin Port’s functions will now replace the immigration checkpoint that has been in operation at the Lotus Bridge on the side of Macau.
In a speech during the port’s grand opening ceremony, Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said “This opens a new chapter in the development of cooperation with Guangdong through the expansion of Macau to Hengqin,”
“There is no doubt that Hengqin is the best platform for Macau to participate in the construction of the Greater Bay Area and integrate into the country’s global development,” added Ho.
In March, officials from China allowed Macau to have jurisdiction on the Hengqin port. According to Macau News Agency, processing of documents for travelers would take less than a minute.
Last week, entry visa to Macau coming from Zhuhai through the IVS was lifted, while travelers from Guangdong province will be issued visas starting 26 August. Meanwhile, travelers from the rest of the mainland will be issued visas starting 23 September.
