Responsible Wagering Australia appoints new CEO

Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) has confirmed the appointment of Kai Cantwell as CEO. He will be taking full charge of the independent organisation which represents Australia’s licensed online betting industry.

From 2017 to 2022 Kai Cantwell was the chief of staff for Australia’s Minister for Families and Social Services. Prior to this, he worked with the Department of Social Services for nearly seven years where he was a Director for New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory. During the pandemic within his role at the Federal Government to a Cabinet Minister, Cantwell achieved to bring year-on-year record investments in Commonwealth Women’s Safety funding from 2019 to 2022.

Taking on RWA leadership, Cantwell will focus on fostering responsible gambling and advocating for heightened standards to meet new demands across Australian states as well as enhancing research and data to measures to tackle problem gambling behaviour.

Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) is the independent peak body for Australian‑licensed wagering service providers (WSPs). Members include Australia’s leading gambling operators that include bet365, Betfair, Entain, Sportsbet, Pointsbet and Unibet. Established in 2016, RWA is overseen by a Board of Directors.  The focus of RWA is to promote socially responsible wagering and advocating to raise the standards in the sector. Members are bound by a code of conduct.

RWA Chairman, Nick Minchin, praised Cantwell’s extensive leadership experience, stating that the new CEO is “uniquely positioned to lead RWA and present a confident and united voice on behalf of its members.”

Minchin also highlighted Cantwell’s comprehensive understanding of social policy, sports, wagering, and government, deeming him an ideal candidate to guide RWA and its members in ongoing efforts to promote socially responsible betting and uphold the highest standards within the gambling sector.

Cantwell’s new appointment commences on 17 April.
