South Korea, Thailand top list of Macau’s highest visitor spending per capita

Data from Macau’s Statistics and Census Service shows visitors from South Korea and Thailand top the list of its highest visitor spending per capita.

According to the agency, each South Korean visitor spent around MOP3,634 (€416) and each Thai visitor spent roughly MOP 3,363 (€386).

Meanwhile, visitors from Mainland China spent about MOP3,055 (€350) each.

Average visitor spending in Macau increases

Government data also showed visitor spending per capita by visitors from South Korea, Thailand, Singapore (€362), Malaysia (€2168), and Japan (€242) rose compared to pre-pandemic spending in 2019.

Spending by visitors from Hong Kong (€133) and Taiwan (€245) also increased.

Total visitor spending other than in gaming, also rises

Aside from data on gaming spending, data from Macau’s Statistics and Census Service showed total visitor spending increased by 292 percent year-on-year to MOP71.25 billion (€8.1 billion) in 2023.

The figure is an 11.2 percent uptick compared to the 2019 figures.

The agency attributed this significant spending increase to the 394.9 percent surge in visitor arrivals last year.

Overnight, same-day visitors spending skyrocket

Furthermore, the data showed the spending of overnight visitors soared to 303 percent to MOP60 billion (€6.84billion) in the previous year.

Same-day visitor spending also skyrocketed by 240 percent year-on-year to MOP11.1 billion (€1.3 billion).

Surge in the number of visitors, a boost for Macau

According to recent data from Macau’s Public Security Police Force, the recent Chinese New Year holiday brought 1,357,803 visitors – most are from mainland China.

This resulted in the boost of casino tourism traffic to 164% compared to the data from the same period in 2023.
