Strict restrictions can lead to unlicensed gambling

7% of the people surveyed reported to be playing on sites that were not authorised by a Swedish gaming licence

A survey conducted by Swedish gaming regulator, Spelinspektionen surveyed 3208 people of which 7% reported to be playing on sites that were not authorised by a Swedish gaming licence.

BOS.nu swedenSwedish operation association Branscheforenigen för Onlinespel (BOS) has responded to this survey stating that these numbers go on to prove that strict restrictions on licensed gaming companies are why players leave for the unlicensed market.

A statement said “The Swedish-licensed gaming market is subject to so many government restrictions that gaming consumers are tired, and increasingly seek their gaming experiences elsewhere… Every consumer who is lost to the unlicensed gaming market is a player who is not reached by the Swedish consumer protection.”

BOS reflected on what could be done to tackle problem gambling and unlicensed play emphasising that this survey is interesting as it takes the temperature of why consumers leave the licensed market, but BOS does not exclude the fact that there needs to be an increase in knowledge about the group of players who need help the most.

“The deposit limit on the licensed companies will not help the overall public health if the customers only continue to play outside the system.”

Back in May, the BOS spoke out about the Swedish government’s proposal to extend the country’s restrictions on online gambling including a SEK5,000 (£428/€476/$540) weekly deposit cap to November 14, 2021.
