BetMGM promotes responsible gambling to the NFL

9 National Football League (NFL) venues are poised to promote GameSense, a responsible gaming campaign by MGM Resorts and BetMGM. 

GameSense was introduced in 2017 and focuses on positive and proactive conversations and discussions related to responsible gambling.

Initially, the campaign was developed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation and eventually licenced to BetMGM. 

The campaign will be promoted at venues belonging to teams that have agreed to partner with BetMGM, including the Kansas City Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Denver Broncos, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Detroit Lions among others. 

Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s chief compliance officer gave this statement on the matter:

“This is an extraordinary moment as we work with our team partners to raise awareness about responsible gaming. Throughout the season, GameSense will play a pivotal role in reminding football fans who bet, to do so responsibly.”

Operators and stakeholders

Senior vice-president and chief compliance officer at MGM Resorts, Stephen Martino, highlighted that collaboration between operators and stakeholders is of vital importance if responsible gaming is rightly meant to take priority.

Martino also stressed that the rapidly changing landscape of sports betting in the US, mostly attributed to the mass legalisation of the gambling activity, is now more important than ever to ensure safe and responsible gambling practices are implemented effectively. 

Sports betting in the NFL

The NFL spent a good deal of time against association with the sports betting industry before doing a comprehensive U-turn which would see the league become the sports betting industry’s top handle and revenue generator. 

As a result, the industry has also received a significantly heightened amount of exposure which has put many more individuals at risk of problem gambling issues and underage engagement. 

Separately, the NFL’s sports betting policy has received heavy scrutiny as of late, due to the multiple suspensions the league is handing out to many of their stars for engaging in betting activities inappropriately.

To counteract these issues numerous steps including the propagation of GameSense, to improve its player education and responsible gambling policies.
