Germany observes nationwide Day of Action Against Gambling Addiction

On 25 September, Germany observes its annual National Day of Action Against Gambling Addiction, aiming to raise awareness about the dangers of gambling addiction, particularly focusing on sports betting this year. The day is coordinated by Germany‘s federal states in collaboration with addiction counselling services, prevention specialists, and self-help groups.

Germany’s Health Minister, Manne Lucha (pictured above), stressed the importance of addressing gambling-related issues, stating, “Roughly 1.4 million people in Germany suffer from a gambling-related disorder, with many others affected indirectly, such as friends and family. Sports betting, in particular, poses a high risk of addiction, as many believe their sports knowledge can predict outcomes. However, sports betting, like any other form of gambling, is largely determined by chance.”

Problem gamblers in Germany

According to a 2023 gambling survey, about 2.4 percent of Germans aged 18 to 70 exhibit signs of gambling disorder. The problem is notably more prevalent among men (3.2 percent) compared to women (1.4 percent). The most affected demographic is young adults aged 18 to 25, with 4.9 percent showing signs of gambling-related issues. According to the survey, problem gamblers often face mounting debts, loss of employment, relationship breakdowns, and even homelessness. Friends and families of addicted individuals frequently suffer from the consequences as well.

Focus on sports betting

This year’s campaign places special emphasis on sports betting, which is increasingly seen as one of the most addictive forms of gambling. With the rise of live betting and digital platforms, betting is available 24/7, increasing the temptation and accessibility for players.

The German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) is actively participating in the campaign by promoting player protection and drawing attention to the prevention measures its members have implemented. These include strict deposit limits, nationwide blocking systems, and self-exclusion options available through the OASIS database. Additionally, they support a national helpline run by the Federal Center for Health Education, offering anonymous professional assistance to individuals struggling with gambling-related problems.

In a unique initiative, the DSWV also collaborates with Mindway AI to offer “Gamalyze,” an online self-assessment tool that allows players to evaluate their gambling behaviour through a gamified experience. The tool is designed to help individuals recognise potential risks early and take action to prevent addiction.
