MGA’s new regulations for exhibition of gaming devices in Malta

On 30 August, 2024, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced updated regulations regarding the exhibition of gaming devices at fairs, exhibitions, and other events related to gaming. Under the Gaming Devices (Exhibition of Gaming Devices) Ruling, initially established in 2019, any person or entity wishing to exhibit gaming devices must now secure an “Exhibition of Gaming Devices Approval.” This requirement applies to both physical and electronic gaming devices, including gaming tables, electronic systems, or other tools used in gaming activities.

To obtain this approval, exhibitors must submit an application at least two weeks before the event, detailing the number and type of gaming devices to be showcased, event specifics, and a declaration confirming that the devices will only be used for exhibition purposes. The MGA has introduced a processing fee of €25 per application. Gaming devices on display are strictly for exhibition and not for providing gaming services, according to the updated guidelines.

Malta’s gaming exhibitions

Malta is a global hub for the gaming industry, hosting numerous prominent iGaming exhibitions, including SiGMA Europe, one of the largest iGaming events worldwide. Held annually, SiGMA attracts thousands of professionals from around the world, making Malta a central location for networking and showcasing innovations in the gaming sector. The new MGA regulations reflect the growing importance of such events in the industry. The new guidelines will streamline the approval process and ensure better oversight, transparency, and compliance.

The role of the MGA

The MGA is the primary regulator of gaming activities in Malta, responsible for ensuring fair and transparent gaming practices. It has a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of the gaming sector by establishing regulations that protect both operators and consumers. The continuous updates to regulations are actively strengthening Malta’s reputation as a trusted gaming jurisdiction.
