NCAA advocate new sports betting regulation

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is advocating for stricter sports betting laws and regulations in relation to sports betting amongst athletes.

This call has been made with the aim of protecting the integrity of its sports and student-athletes.

While many states have laws permitting sports betting, the NCAA believes that not all of them have adequately robust protections and inconsistent integrity provisions.

The NCCA provisions

The NCCA intends to partner with lawmakers, regulators and industry leaders to protect student-athletes from harassment and threats in the rapidly growing sports betting industry.

Proposed provisions include mandatory reporting hotlines for gambling authorities, increased penalties for bettors harassing student-athletes, and mandatory education for operators to identify harassment.

Stricter rules are also in development with the aim of preventing individuals under 21 from betting along with measures to improve problem gambling-related education.

The revenue generated from sports betting is intended to support education for higher-risk college student populations which include student athletes.

NCAA sports betting controversies

As of late the NCAA has been dealing with investigations of gambling within its athletic ranks along with coaches’ participation which have led to considerations of penalisations for sports betting.

As far back as July, The Associated Press found that there have been 175 known infractions of sports betting since 2018.

The proposed changes include eliminating the withholding of athletes from competition on the first offence. This would disregard the total value of betting value and would include bets placed on other sports at the student athletes’ own school.

Additionally, the requirement of education on sports wagering rules would be removed as would the implementation of escalated penalties for subsequent offences.

In any case, any new guidelines would still require NCAA Council approval for implementation.
