Strikes at Crown Melbourne

Adding to Crown Melbourne’s multifaceted issues, the workers at their resorts are planning to strike on several grounds.

Crown’s workers wish to garner fair wage increases, higher weekend and holiday pay rates, better work rosters and service-based payment progression.

The strike

The strike is scheduled to take place during the Melbourne Cup, undoubtedly an important event in the Australian calendar dubbed, The Race That Stops a Nation.

It is hoped that this scheduled date will cause more harm than usual to the company’s fortunes.

Initially, the United Workers Union wanted 3,600 workers to take part in the strike, claiming that all union members should be afforded the ability to strike in accordance with a recent vote.

However, Crown has only agreed to allow 3,100 employees to participate, and what’s more is that the resort attempted to only allow 1,700 when word first met the casino giant.

Crown’s woes

If this wasn’t enough to cause significant disruption, Crown has been undergoing a notably tremulous patch at the moment.

The Australian casino and hospitality giant has been facing regulatory issues along with struggling to increase visitation rates and taxation disputes.

These are perhaps the biggest reasons for the poor working conditions at the resort’s venues. 

Strikes elsewhere

Similarly to Crown’s situation, Detroit’s casino workers have now entered a third week of strikes but a resolution does seem to be on the cards a couple of oceans away from Oceania.

These strikes have seen a healthy 3,700 unionised casino workers disrupt casino operations.

Meanwhile, unionised workers in Las Vegas are in ongoing negotiations with local casino employers. 

A recent peaceful protest they organised unfortunately resulted in arrests, causing disappointment within the union.
