Tonje Sagstuen assumes permanent CEO role at Norsk Tipping

Tonje Sagstuen has been officially appointed as the permanent CEO of Norsk Tipping, following a period of temporary leadership.

The state-owned gambling monopoly’s board chair, Sylvia Brustad, commended Sagstuen’s experience and leadership during her acting role, expressing confidence in her ability to guide Norsk Tipping into the future.

Leadership transition

Tonje Sagstuen took on the role of acting CEO on 1 September this year, stepping in for Thor Gjermund Eriksen, who departed less than a year into his tenure.

Sagstuen, formerly an assistant professor, has been an integral part of Norsk Tipping’s senior management since 2014, serving as deputy CEO since 2018. Her extensive experience also includes leading Norsk Tipping’s responsibility, society, and communication department.

Brustad praised Sagstuen’s familiarity with the company and its employees. She spoke about Sagstuen’s skills as a seasoned and accomplished manager. The decision to appoint Sagstuen permanently reflects the board’s confidence in her ability to lead Norsk Tipping effectively.

Norway’s Unique Path

Sagstuen assumes the CEO role at a critical juncture for Norsk Tipping and the broader gambling landscape in Norway. The country is currently contemplating maintaining its gambling monopoly system, making it the sole European nation with such a model. While neighboring countries like Finland, Sweden, and Denmark have shifted to licensing systems in the past 25 years, Norway appears steadfast in retaining its unique approach.

In September, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) urged Norway to consider transitioning to a licensing system. However, Norway, for the time being, shows no inclination to reform its current model.

CEO’s Vision

Expressing gratitude for the board’s trust, Sagstuen acknowledged the responsibility bestowed upon her. As Norsk Tipping plays a crucial role in Norway, she looks forward to advancing the company’s essential social mission. Sagstuen’s leadership will be instrumental in navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead, shaping the future of Norsk Tipping within the distinctive landscape of Norway’s gambling industry.
