World Tote Association announces election for new board during Japan conference

The World Tote Association (WoTA) announced the election of a new board at its general meeting during the Asian Racing Conference in Sapporo, Japan. The newly elected board is set to steer the organisation through an ambitious agenda for 2025-26.

A brief overview of WoTA

The World Tote Association is an international organisation that focuses on promoting and advancing pool betting worldwide. It plays a crucial role in bringing together and integrating different betting pool organisations, encouraging them to work collaboratively. WoTA has 22 tote operators representing a turnover of more than $43.2 billion and 10 associate members.

The recent general meeting held in Japan provided an ideal platform for members to discuss and align their strategies for the upcoming years. During the meeting, the board members collaborated to set a dynamic agenda. Key areas of focus included strengthening national and global betting pools, expanding pari-mutuel pool betting, and tackling illegal wagering issues.

Welcoming new leadership

Fundi Sithebe, CEO of 4Racing in South Africa, and Keith Johnson, President of 1/ST Technology Group/AmTote, have been elected as co-Chairs of WoTA. Their leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategic direction to the association. Sithebe and Johnson take over from Alex Frost, CEO of the UK Tote Group, and Hans Lord Skarploth, CEO of ATG in Sweden.

On taking over as co-Chairs, Fundi Sithebe and Keith Johnson expressed, “We are delighted to be taking over as co-Chairs of the World Tote Association. Over the last five years, WoTA has made significant progress in developing the relationship between members and increasing understanding of the role pool betting plays in supporting horseracing around the globe. We thank Alex and Hasse for their excellent stewardship, and the entire WoTA Board for their efforts, and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to further our collective ambitions for the good of horseracing and society.”

Riko Luiking, General Manager of German Tote, will serve as Treasurer. Luiking’s role will be crucial in managing the financial aspects of WoTA and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources.

WoTA aims to focus on strengthening betting pools and expanding markets, which will likely enhance the overall effectiveness and reach of pool betting. WoTA’s efforts to support the horse racing industry through improved pool betting mechanisms will contribute to the sport’s growth.
