Fanatics is benefiting from Jay-Z’s star outreach, as he seeks to obtain a mobile sports betting license in New York.

The rap icon and founder of Roc Nation officially became the group’s new vice president following a $325 million investment, valuing the merchandising company at $18 billion. In his new role, Jay-Z will advise the sports merchandising giant’s strategic and creative direction. The goal is to expand the reach of the Fanatics bookmaker.

Last week, the company’s founder, Michael Rubin, spoke of his plans to expand beyond sports products, thanks to the recently acquired funds. Former FanDuel CEO Matt King will lead Fanatics Sportsbook.

Rubin commented on these changes:

We realized that we had this incredible opportunityto become the leading digital sports platform. Fanatics will allow sports fans to buy any sports product.”

New York’s mobile sports betting market is set to open early next year and promises to be incredibly lucrative. Currently, the city only allows sports betting at four non-tribal casinos. Fanatics will face stiff competition as they join the few companies that have filed bids this month to operate mobile sportsbooks , such as FanDuel, DraftKings, Bally’s, BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook.
