Apple pauses posting of gambling ads on App Store

Apple has paused the posting of gambling-related ads on its App Store product pages after an outcry from developers.

The move comes less than a week after the tech giant expanded the number of ads in its App Store listings, according to TechCrunch and other tech media reports.

Gambling ads had quickly begun to appear in sections such as “you might also like,” promoting online casinos and sportsbooks.

Developers took to Twitter and other social media platforms to complain that online casinos, or sports book ads were appearing on their game or app’s page. One picture showed an ad for online slots on the page of an app designed to help with problem gambling.

Apple has not said how long the pause will be, or whether it’s reviewing its policies.

According to Apple’s own rules for advertising in the App Store, there are a list of restricted practices, which include gambling and alcohol. These are aimed at ensuring companies are advertising to appropriate age audiences or having the necessary licenses or permits for the country or region.

Apple has been seeking to boost the level of revenue it receives from advertising. In fiscal 2021, the company reported $68 billion in sales from its services division, which includes ad sales.
