EU regulators urge: bring back Expert Group on Gambling
14 EU member states have issued a formal request to re-establish the Expert Group to facilitate cooperation on gambling regulations
As Dutch Gambling Authority René Jansen has confirmed over a webinar yesterday morning, gambling authorities of 14 European Union member states have issued a formal request to the European Commission to re-establish the Commission-mandated EU Expert Group on Gambling.
The Expert Group had already existed for five years, but was disbanded in 2018, despite being supported by the vast majority of regulators. It was a platform facilitating international cooperation, where regulators could exchange information and share their strategies.
Members were experienced gambling regulatory authority representatives that worked on joint projects like the European Commission’s 2014 Recommendation on consumer protection in online gambling and related matters.
Currently the €100 billion gambling market of Europe is devoid of a proper systematic approach to cooperation. The industry however is cross-border in nature and demands common solutions, the EGBA states. It has announced full support for the Experts Group, making the overdue implementation just a matter of time.
