Gary Delooze appointed Executive Director at Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has appointed Gary Delooze as its new Executive Director of Information Technology, effective 15 January. The announcement was made by the HKJC at the end of last week, indicating a significant step in reinforcing the Club’s position in the industry.

Club’s record turnover in sports betting

The financial performance of the HKJC during the fiscal year ending June 30th underscores its prominence in the industry.

The Club reported a record turnover of $38.87 billion, with horse racing contributing $13.31 billion and football betting turnover totalling $20 billion.

As Gary Delooze takes the helm of IT leadership at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, industry observers are keen to witness the technological advancements and strategic initiatives that will unfold under his guidance. His wealth of experience and proven track record in information technology positions him as a key player in steering the HKJC towards continued success and innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of the iGaming industry.

Technology crucial to HKJC

Delooze, set to be a crucial member of the Board of Management of the HKJC, will directly report to the CEO, Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. His mandate includes the enhancement of the Club’s leading position and implementation of best practices across various domains, including Racing, Wagering, Membership, and other key functions. Delooze is expected to play a pivotal role in driving the Club’s strategic programs, according to a company release.

With an extensive background in IT leadership, Delooze brings valuable experience to his new role. He previously served as the Chief Information Officer of The Co-operative Bank in the UK, along with holding significant positions as CIO and Chief Technology Officer of the Nationwide Building Society financial services firm in the UK. Delooze’s career also features roles with renowned organizations such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, IBM, and Ernst & Young.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the HKJC’s Board of Management, Delooze emphasized the crucial role of technology in the Club’s operations and the overall experience of its members and customers. In a social media post, he stated that he is “delighted” to be part of an organization where technology is integral to its functioning.

The timing of Delooze’s appointment aligns with the HKJC’s strong resurgence in business following the lifting of COVID restrictions. The Club experienced notable growth, particularly after being granted additional ‘simulcast race’ days.

The HKJC is actively advocating against potential increases in levies on racing and other betting activities, drawing on Macau as an example.
