Independent advertising complaints board launched in Denmark

Spilreklamenævnet, launched by Danish gambling operators, will allow receive complaints about marketing activities related to gambling

Danish Operators have just launched Spilreklamenævnet. This independent board is aimed at managing complaints and strengthening the ‘code of conduct on advertising’ by monitoring what goes out. This board will allow individuals to file complaints about gambling marketing activities if needed.

Danish professional services organisation HORESTA will be in charge of managing complaints by providing a direct gambling complaints service for players in the country across all media.

A five-member board led by Copenhagen City Court Judge Jacob Scherfig will be in charge of managing Spilreklamenævnet duties.

Other board members include Danske Spil’s Legal Director Kate Jacquerot, Morten Rønde, Director of Danish responsible gaming organisation Spillebranchen, Erik Jensen from Casino Copenhagen and Dansk Automat Brancheforening chairman Gunnar Sørensen.

Thomas Marcussen, Clinic Manager for the Research Clinic for Gambling Addiction at Aarhus University Hospital, and Lars Pynt Andersen, an associate professor at Aalborg University, will both join the board as well.

“In the gaming industry, we are very aware that we bear a responsibility for the users who use games. With the Gaming Advertising Board, we now have an effective watchdog, which must help to ensure and maintain responsible and ethical marketing of games,” Rønde said.

The Director further expressed that he is pleased that the constitution and the formal establishment of the Gambling Advertising Board are now finally in place, “with the Gambling Advertising Board, we have an effective “watchdog”, which must help to ensure and maintain a responsible and ethical marketing of gambling.”

Back in 2018 the founding of Spilreklamenævnet released planned advertising directives which saw regulated incumbents pledge to observe new binding code-of-conduct protections on gambling advertising. The changes introduced during this year saw all Danish licensed operators display underage and problem gambling warnings across their advertising mediums.

Other further enforced rules stated that gambling TV adverts could not share the same advertising slots with payday loans and credit services with all licensed operators agreeing to switch off marketing campaigns instantly should they be deemed inappropriate.
