PAGCOR defends legitimate POGOs, as senator calls for review

The Philippines Amusement and Gaming Corp (PAGCOR) has defended the legitimate gambling operators in the country as calls mount for a review of the industry.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco said that the recent reports of shutdowns of illegal gambling operators and the mass deportation of Chinese nationals were not related the the Philippines Offshore Gambling Operators (POGOs).

“The agency emphasises that any individual, group, or entity which conducts online gambling without approval to operate should not be categorised as POGO,” Tengco was cited as saying.

He said PAGCOR is closely monitoring the activities of the firms it has licensed.

Weeding out illegal operators

The Philippines has launched an inter-agency crackdown on illegal gambling operations on the orders of President Ferdinand Marcos. The order came following a rise in kidnappings and human trafficking.

The issue has led to a bill being introduced in the senate calling for a total ban on online gambling, which risks giving the country a bad name.

On Friday, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri reiterated that there is a need to take a “hard look” at the government’s policy on POGO firms.

“We have to undertake an in-depth review of the pros and cons of allowing POGOs to operate in our country in light of the recent spate of abduction cases and other established negative social costs,” the state news agency cited Zubiri as saying.

Reports earlier this week said that PAGCOR had cancelled the licenses of some 175 POGOs. These firms employed 40,000 Chinese nationals, most of whom were working illegally in the country and will be deported.

China has said it will support the Philippines’ crackdown on illegal gambling.
