Swedish online sportsbooks receive in-play markets warning

Swedish online sportsbooks have received warnings from local regulator Spelinspektionen regarding their in-play market offerings

Several operators recently breached a number of Gaming Act provisions on sportsbook markets, which led to a wider awareness campaign in the region.

AN Trav Galopp (ATG) admitted to accepting wagers on a horse ridden by a jockey aged under-18. Wagering on events, competitions or matches in which athletes participating are below 18 is illegal in Sweden. No penalty was issued as the ATG immediately informed the regulator.

Eleven fines dished out by Spelinspektionen for in-play wagering rules and market definitions were re-evaluated last year. The Administrative Court of Linköping had its work cut out as it had to go through penalties issued against bet365, Bethard Group, Entain and Flutter Entertainment.

Swedish online gambling trade body BOS was forced to write Spelinspektionen, citing licensed incumbent concerns that Chapter 8 rules did not accommodate technical requirements with regards to how bookmakers gather information related to sporting events and their participants.

BOS demanded that Spelinspektionen freeze certain Chapter 8 provisions, in order for issues surrounding in-play athletes under-18 to be ironed out by operators.
