UK Gambling Comission’s Neil McArthur steps down from CEO role

The Chief Executive Officer will leave the body after 15 years serving as a regulator

On Monday afternoon, the UK Gambling Commission sent a communication to stakeholders announcing Neil McArthur stepping down as a regulator.

Having joined in 2006 as a legal advisor, McArthur replaced Sarah Harrison as CEO in 2018.

Neil McArthur commented on his departure, stating:

“I am proud of everything the Gambling Commission has achieved during my 15 years with the organisation. We have taken significant steps forward to make gambling fairer and safer and I know that I leave the organisation in a strong position to meet its future challenges. With a review of the Gambling Act underway now feels the right time to step away and allow a new Chief Executive to lead the Commission on the next stage in its journey.

Bill Moyes, Chairman of the Gambling Commission, took time to thank Neil McArthur for his years heading the UKGC:

“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank Neil for his many years of commitment and service to the Gambling Commission. A lot has been achieved during his time here and Neil can rightly feel proud of the organisation’s progress during his tenure as Chief Executive.”

Throughout his tenure at the UKGC, McArthur oversaw the implementation of numerous initiatives some of which were seen too heavy handed. McArthur has also played a significant role in campaigns aimed at increased safety towards gamblers.

The recruitment process for McArthur’s replacement is underway as the UKGC are looking for a replacement for an interim period. This allows Bill Moyes’ successor, who is also set to leave later this year, the chance to appoint a permanent Chief Executive.

Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Gardner and COO Sally Jones will jointly become Acting Chief Executive.
