UK: Genting Casino set to permanently close its 4th casino

Malaysian operator – Genting – is set to close its doors in Southport, north west of England, with 38 staff members at risk of redundancy

Genting UK was one of many casino brands questioning the decision by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, when he decided that casinos in England will not reopen on fall although previously there were other plans.

genting southport | SiGMA NEWSUltimately this has impacted the industry, further delaying the sectors return to normality especially with the announcement coming in such a short notice.

Now company management says closures of some of its sites have been “simply unavoidable”Genting has already closed its casinos in Margate, Torquay and Bristol and has reduced its workforce in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Blackpool and Birmingham due to the lack of business available as a result of the constant lockdowns.

A Genting spokesperson said:

We can confirm that we have started a consultation process with all of our staff at Genting Casino Southport, with 38 employees being put at risk of redundancy. As we all know, the coronavirus pandemic has created unprecedented challenges right across the leisure industry and whilst we have worked tirelessly over the past 10 months to sustain the business as best as possible, permanent club closures have, unfortunately, been simply unavoidable.

To date, we have had to close three of our casinos as a direct result of the pandemic and we are now proposing that Southport becomes the fourth. We know what difficult news this will be for all of our hard-working colleagues in Southport and will do everything we can to support them at this challenging time.

Since the announcement of Tier 4 followed by a nationwide lockdown, there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of land-based casinos and, since it is unclear when the vaccine will roll out to millions of people,  we may see more land-based casinos suffer the same fate as some of Genting Casinos.
