UK: Slot revenue hits £202.9m milestone while gambling revenue falls

While gambling revenue did not meet expectations for 2020/2021, slots are reported to have reached a record high of £202.9m

During the final month of lockdown in England, online slots revenue hit a £202.9m milestone, an increase of 15.2% from February and 1.5% rise from December 2020.

The British Gambling Commission reported that online gambling GGR reached £546.2m in March following a 4.1% month-on-month rise. Impressively, revenue from slot machines encompassed 202.9m, 37% of online gambling revenue.

This follows after the number of slots players also hit a new record at 3.3m, up 10.0% from the month prior.

Nonetheless, the commission advised against comparing year-on-year figures as a result of ‘different operating circumstances’ evoked due to the pandemic.

On the other hand, the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announced that gambling revenue fell short for the 2020-2021 period as a result of the multiple national lockdowns placing the casino and sportsbetting industry at a stand-still. From April 2020 to March 2021, the HMRC reported £2.83bn in revenue had been generated, a drop of £182 million or 6% when compared to the year prior.
