Alea’s journey of creativity and innovation into virtual reality

In the realm of innovation and creativity, Alea stands as a beacon, fostering an environment that encourages employees to “think outside the box”. The company believes in a balanced approach, where everyone’s creative ideas are valued, but where the overall direction of the company is not compromised.

One striking example of this approach is the company’s venture into virtual reality (VR). In 2015, Alea embarked on a pioneering project to build the first virtual reality casino. This was not a one-off project, but a sustained effort over three years, during which the company invested over a million dollars and went on to build a second version.

Alexandre Tomic, (pictured above), provided the visionary guidance, while a dedicated and creative team diligently executed the project. He explains how the team created a 3D VR environment so breathtaking that it moved people to tears. Alea did not just stop at creating a beautiful environment; but pushed the boundaries and built an emulation of a web browser in the VR environment, allowing users to access slots from various gaming platforms.

The company’s VR project was not just about creating an amazing gaming experience. For instance, Alea recreated the environment around a candy slot game, and in the first VR environment, they had symbols popping out of the screen during a big win.

Despite the company’s significant investment in VR, the technology has not yet become mainstream however Alexandre Tomic remains hopeful.

Balancing innovation and business goals

The company’s journey in VR exemplifies its commitment to innovation, even when it does not lead to immediate financial gain. Alea lost around USD 1.5 million on the VR project, but at the same time gained recognition from the industry and pride in building an amazing product. This experience serves as a reminder that while it’s important to pursue innovative ideas, it’s equally crucial to keep the company’s overall direction in mind. The funds invested in the VR project could have been allocated to other projects that might have yielded more immediate returns.

Alexandre Tomic says that Alea fosters creativity and innovation among its employees by encouraging them to pursue their ideas while keeping the company’s goals in mind. Their journey in VR serves as a testament to their commitment to innovation and their willingness to take risks, even when the path to success is not clear. This approach has not only led to groundbreaking projects but also earned Alea recognition and respect in the industry. Despite the financial losses, the company continues to explore and innovate, always looking forward to the next big thing.
